**The contest has ended. Thank you so much for all your wonderful comments. The winner of the 10 books is Angie from SevEn cLoWn CirCuS. Congrats!!**
I am a voracious reader. Voracious. Book a day voracious. Until last year. February to be exact. Because that is when I started blogging. And went from a book a day. To a book or so a week.
Which is actually rather ironic because right after I started blogging I took up the 888 challenge. The challenge was rather simple in concept. To read 8 books in 8 categories in '08. 64 books. Easy peasy for a voracious reader like me. Except I had not counted on the distraction. (My complete list with categories is over on my left side bar)
If you look over my original list for the books I planned to read you'll see that I dreamed big. One of the big things I wanted to do was to read Jane Austen. I wanted to read Pride and Prejudice. Sense and Sensibility. Northanger Abbey. And those two others that I cannot think of. I tried to read them. Really. I did. My eyes glazed over. I yawned. And then I couldn't remember what I actually read. I read more of Sense and Sensibility. Because it was one of my book club books. But not all of it. I just couldn't bring myself to do it.
I wanted to read award winning books. To see what sets them apart from others. What makes something a Pulitzer? A Newberry? A National Book award winner? And what I discovered is that these particular award winners are really good. Eye opening. And even entertaining. I sort of felt like I cheated though. As the year began to wane...I found my list a little too ambitious. So I replaced some titles with Newberry winners so that I could finish my list. And actually here is where you will find one of my worst books of the year. The one where I am not sure why it won an award: The Astonishing Life of Octavian Nothing. Yuck.
I wanted to read books that I actually had bought that were sitting on my shelf. Books that I had not started because I set them aside for library books. Because those have a due date. Rationalizing that the books I had on my shelf I could read anytime. But don't. This is the category where I really cheated. Of the books that I read here...I think that only one was there at the beginning of the challenge. The rest were on my shelf. But just because I brought them home from the library and stuck them there. Or because Rhea mailed them to me. (And just an aside. Ummm. Rhea. I giggled at you. Because you forgot that you mailed books to me. Like "The Hunger Games." And then lamented about your missing copy in the comments of Lula's blog. I am still giggling. Sorry. *snort*)
Another category was non-fiction. Which I like. Sometimes. Like "Devil in the White City." Fabulous. But his other book - "Isaac's Storm." Not so much. Or I was caught up in the title. Like "Sin in the Second City." A book about madams. Sex. Politics. Intriguing, no? Sort of. It had its moments. And I had my own copy that I read in the pool while at the beach over the summer. It is rather water logged. Still. And then there is Tucker Max. I think that I still need some brain bleach to get some of those stories out of my head.
And then. My high brow category. To read the classics. Note. No Jane Austen's on this completed list. But I was quite pleasantly surprised with my list. Dracula. Fabulous. Orwell? Genius. Brave New World? Amazingly ahead of it's time. Lost Horizon? If you are a LOST fan...this is a MUST read. The only book I had issues with is "Little Women." So freakin' saccharine sweet, I think I fell into a diabetic coma.
And for the rest. Well...the rest is all part of my usual repertoire. Because I love to read. For me, reading is about pleasure. Escape. Entertainment. I don't want to struggle with a book just because I should read it. I want to read it. Enjoy it. For it's own sake. I want to be lost in a story. I want to be so engrossed that I stay up all night. And neglect everything that I am supposed to be doing. Those are the signs of a good book.
In honor of SITS and their Spring Fling...I am giving away 10 of the books I read for the challenge. It's a mixed bag because I get most of my books from the library. So what you are getting are well read...slightly water logged...books.
Included are: Dead until Dark by Charlaine Harris (the first of the Sookie Stackhouse mysteries - and the inspiration behind HBO's "True Blood"); Lost Horizon by James Hilton; The Lost Duke of Wyndham by Julia Quinn (fabulous, sexy, funny Regency romance); How to Teach Filthy Rich Girls by Zoey Dean (a very intelligent and witty chick lit book); Sin in the Second City by Karen Abbott (quite water logged. Didn't quite fulfill it's potential. Still. Rather interesting.); Interpreter of the Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri (FABULOUS Pulitzer Prize winner - and if you haven't read her other novel - The Namesake - you need to add it to your to be read pile!); Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen (wonderful, lyrical. Read it and email me. I want to know your impressions of the ending.) Gods Behaving Badly by Marie Phillips (fun romp with the Greek Gods in modern London. Could have been better); Austenland by Shannon Hale; and The Year of Living Biblically by AJ Jacobs (a hysterical look at a man trying to live EXACTLY as the Bible dictates).
So...what do you need to do to win? Simply leave me a comment. Have you ever done a reading challenge? What kinds of books do you like to read? What are you reading right now?
I'll do a random drawing and announce the winner on Thursday.

I'll enter. About about those books I sent you. Apparently I sent you my brain too, because I can't find it...
And, I've loved the books you sent me. You're the best book buddy ever!
Great giveaway.
We should make a book club solely to read all the books mentioned on LOST. That would be AWESOME.
oh i'll enter.
i have not done an actual reading challenge, per say.
by have read off of reading list.
i am an avid reader, and could totally drop mad cash in the book store without blinking an eye.
:D
I adore reading. It's definitely one of my favorite "me time" things to do. The last time I did a real reading challenge was when I was in fifth grade. I read my little heart out and ended up winning my family a turkey for Thanksgiving. Yeah!!!
heatherdemke(at)gmail(dot)com
Random comment... No seriously - I love to read. My parents would punish when I was little by scaling back the time I had to read (which, in hindsight, was sort of genius/stupid, all at the same time).
B&N is one of those dangerous stores... And ever since I got a Kindle, it's been worse - you download a sample, and then click buy...and it magically appears @ 2am, when you can't go buy New Moon after you got hooked on Twilight.
If I were to win, I promise these would get shared between my girlfriends - we have a little book club between us :)
Ha! You are the second SITSta I've hit, and the second one giving away Austenland! I'm going to have to read it! I am big into chicklit...Jodi Picoult, Marian Keyes. Debbie Macomber is a new fav, her blossom street books are great! Dennis Lehane (so NOT chick lit) is a fav too!
Uh, that other SITSta giving away Austenland is... ME!
Girl, I swear... we really do share a brain. Freaky!
I just finished The Other Boleyn Girl about a week ago... just picked up The Boleyn Inheritance a few days ago while I was at the local used book store, so that will be the next one I start... sometime...
I love reading, so I'll enter. Someone once called me, in the nicest possible way, a 'reading slut' ...because I read anything I can get my hands on !! :-)
It doesn't mean I'll finish the book though, as I either get grabbed at the beginning or I don't.
Currently I'm reading (have to go into the bathroom to get it..brb :-).. ) Hmmm..they were in the bedroom...books all over this house!!
'The Whole Truth' - David Baldacci
and 'The Darkest Night' - Gena Showalter
I could use some grown up literature to read. Other than blogs and the very depressing newspaper...I haven't read anything since "lovely bones" which I really enjoyed. I also read "Live, Eat, Pray" and enjoyed that as well. I got to read while on vacation back in October!! I usually don't like women writers as we have discussed before - but I was pleasantly surprised...
Sighhhhh ...I did it again. Forgot to check the posting ID...it was all that running around finding where I'd left my current books..
That was not Jay who wrote that..it was me!!
So enter me and not him :-)
Though he's started reading since he go laid off...much to my surprise he's become a great fan of J.D. Robb and her stories about Eve Dallas :-)
My reading styles are extremely close to yours. I actually read the entire Twilight series (yes, 4 books, plus the one online) in 3 days. I just can't put them down! Right now I'm reading The Shack. It's a rare read for me, a very religious book, but I'm into it. Can't say I've ever done an official book challenge but would be up to it! Thanks and can't wait til Thursday!
I love reading fractured fairytales and other fairytale retellings! I wish this giveaway was open to anyone and everyone around the world!! :)
Have you heard of "...and the Ladies of the Club." by Helen Hooven Santmyer? I loved it. It helped me understand what my grandmother's life was like. It was my bathtub book and I was said when it ended. It was the only book Helen has written.
I love, love, love to read. Right before Christmas I was a reading (and blogging) machine. And then I fell into a coma from lack of sleep. Okay, not really, the coma part not the reading and blogging part. But I do love to read. I read the Twilight series and loved it. Harry Potter. Can we sense a youthful theme here? Youthful sounds so much better than Juvenile.
Oh I love books!!!
I am actually reading two books right now, The Historian and Dead until Dark series!
I love fantasy but not so much the sci-fi stuff.
I liked Little Women, but I didnt exactly love it. Personally, I liked Oliver Twist and David Copperfield a whole lot better.
I hope I win!!!
I'm rotating between three right now: Where the River Ends, To Kill a Mockingbird, and a Rob Bell book that I won't name here because of the title--but a very good book!
Funny how blogging can mess up our former functioning lives--seriously!!
I'm with D on the Twilight books ~ read all 4 in 4 days (hubby & kids thought I was CRAZY !), right now I'm reading the online "Twilight" book from Edwards perspective ~ loving it !! I used to read at least a book a day too ~ then came blogging *sigh*.....now it's probably a book every other week ! Hmmm... never done a reading challenge............
Great giveaway! I LOVE to read, but have also lost some of my time to the blogosphere. I'm still in awe of your 888. I like realistic fiction. I just started The Story of Edgar Sawtelle, but then the dog got sick and it's all about dogs, so I stopped. For now. Now I'm reading Good Little Wives or something like that, mindless, not at all deep. But gives me something to look at on the elliptical.
I can't even begin to tell you how badly I want to win this one. And, I absolutely LOVED the post! :)
I don't have ANY of these books...except Austenland, which I loved, and you didn't. Poop on you!
You know I love books...and reading...and you...
Quite a few of those are on my "to read" list so I'd love to win!!! :D
Hey Kat! I've started reading again as a distraction from babies. You know me, reading YA books. Missed ya!
Oh my Kat, you certainly do know the way to a girl's heart... I too am a collector of books. Though the hubby might be a little exasperated with more books in our house, I am highly intrigued by this collection that you're giving away :)
kat, books books books
yeah the best thing ever
enter me and lets chat over coffee about which are best
i am going to do a review of annies silver lure next week
i won it and finished it now.
a adore books. currently in the middle of reading revolutionary road, i am potential + a book about brain development in children from birth to 5.
You had me at Sookie...I've been wanting to read these books, but I haven't gotten around to it. In fact I've added it to the 100's of books that I want to read.
I will read anything. I mean ANYTHING but it's got to keep my interest. Or I've got to be captive...you don't even want to know how many times I've read the tampax box. LOL!
I love to read. I am doing the 100 book reading challenge right now, but am a bit behind. I will catch up in the summer. I love to read ALL kinds of books. Right now I am reading Fablehaven, Atonement and a history book about the American West.
I'm all about reading. Check out GoodReads.com and add me as your friend. I, too, get most of my books from the library. Every once in a while I can afford to buy a good book, but mostly, I get them from yard sales if I have them in my possession. I L O V E to read. LOVE IT. I can't sleep at night if I don't get to read some first.
I did a reading challenge in grade school once...it was a contest. I lost. I should have won! LOL! If I don't win, I may have to pick up one or two of those books anyway!
hey-I read a few of these with you! do you have a list for 2009? we could read some more together!
Oh yay! I so ♥ books!!! I read alot too and my tastes are pretty eclectic. Huge history and mystery buff, and stuff that will scare me witless, lol!
Happy Spring Fling!
Come on over to my blog to register for my pearl earring giveaway too!!
I love books..I read constantly..I'm reading 2 books-a religious one and "Hideaway" by Dean Koontz.
Books. Oooo I love books. I really need to find more time to read. I've never taken on a reading challenge. Maybe I need to. Huh!
Oh and Pride and Prejudice. LOVED IT! It is one of my favorites.
what a great giveaway. i am a huge reader and right now my reading list is very long. i think i've checked too many out of the library and have to catch myself up!
i've never done a reading contest/challenge, but it does sound fun!
Yay! More books!
I will read just about anything. Seriously. I'm currently reading "Fool" by Christopher Moore. It's good, but I'm only 30 or so pages in to it.
Toddler. Teething. Flinging. Read later...
I have never entering a reading challenge.. sounds, challenging:) I do enjoy reading, right now Im reading Eckhart Tolle's A New Earth (after all, Oprah endorses it:) but I like all different kinds of books..
I've been wanting to read sooooo many of these books for awhile - I just had to enter!! What a great pile of books!
I am on my own reading challenge this year too! I would love to win, those all look like great books!!
What a cool contest and my my what a reader you are!
I am also a book a day reader, but only when a book really grabs me. The last book (I should say books, as it's a series) was Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. I've only gotten through the first 3 so far. I'm something like 2 holds deep at the library for the 4th, but I can't wait!
Anyway, I'd love some new books to read! Thanks for the opportunity!
I have done a reading contest but hit a wall when the third book was one I couldn't stand. I couldn't even speed read my way through it. :)
Hey come visit me at http://gladysspeaks.blogspot.com/2009/03/original-adventures-of-hank.html and sign up to win some MORE books.
I have to say I do love books. I get most of mine from the Library also. Right now I am reading "Cavedweller" by Dorothy Allison. Just started it and it seems like a good fine. I like to have time to myself to read because I do stay at home with my little one. This gives me a challenge to find the time.
Happy Spring Fling.
I have never done a reading challenge but I do like to read off the Best Seller's List. I am such a lemming:-)
i have not done a reading challege but love reading and could **really** use some good books!
I am a huge reader but have never read any of these. I would love it!
I am visiting via SITS and hope you'll stop by and enter my giveaway too.
I am a BOOKWHORE! I have books in MY CAR, and all over my desk, dining room table, kitchen...IT drives the people that LOVE me crazy. I can be seen standing cooking dinner with a book in my hand. It is the one thing that I complete. I can not say that for scrapbooking or all that other stuff but BOOKS...YES I complete them and they COMPLETE ME.
I have not joined a book challenge ever but I have done a book club or two.
I like all kinds of books and read a very BROAD GENRE. I have not blogged much lately because I have been enjoying my DIRTY LITTLE ANNE RICE BOOKS and a few others. I have probably drowned myself in about 15 books the last few weeks actually...all GENRES!
May Canadians enter? I like a wide variety of books - right now I'm reading Table of Contents by John McPhee. I seldom join reading challenges, but I have participated in one or two in the past.
You said books and I said Hot Diggity! that's my kind of post.
I just read Amercian Wife - hello fantastic. I'm waiting on a biography of Laura Bush to get here to see how much AW really is based on her life.
Reading Revolutionary Road right now, really good so far at 150 pages or so in.
Anna Karenina was really good, try it!
On my list: I told myself War and Peace by Christmas next year. So far I haven't cracked the cover but I have hope!
I love reading. I have pledged to read 30 per day to the kids for a year. I love Nicholas Sparks and right now I am about to finish Barbara Walters book.
WOW fantastic giveaway. I'm reading my way through a lot of Linda Lael Miller books I got then onto the new James patterson
?????? I have read one book in the last 18 years...I can't even fathom reading a book a day...or even a book a month!
WOW!!!!
I have a serious book addiction.
I have a book blog at http://mimisyearinbooks.blogspot.com
I am a reading addict. Every night I lay in bed til almost 2 reading. I usually can read a whole book in one night. Its amazing how much I spend reading. I've never had a reading challenge because I mean I'm always reading something, so I really dont see the point in me having one because I'm more than likely going to read it anyways. As for my FAV FAV books..I love romances. Hey, I guess if you cant have romance you can atleast read about it..lol
I love to read...love it! I've read Water for Elephants already and really enjoyed it. Hunger Games is another one of my faves. Great giveaway.
Right now I am reading Graceling by Kristin Cashore...another book i heard about in bloggerville!
isn't blogging reading?
hahahaha
Add me in! Thanks SITSta!
Enter me in the running! I love me a good book or 10. :)
Life is Sweet
i'm just trying to challenge myself by keeping a log on my blog page of the books i've read this year.
I used to read a book every day or two, too, I'm down to one every five days or so now, all cause of blogging, too!! This is a great bunch of books, I haven't read any of them yet!
I love to read. I love Jane Austen - I think you should give her another try, really. The books are delightful. I haven't read any of the book in your giveaway yet. Yay! Thanks for holding such a generous giveaway!
I am so incredibly bored right now. I could use a good stack of books before school starts back. Me, me, me.
i don't have near as much time to read now as i did before my kiddos, but i do get to read a little before bed every night:) thanks for the chance to win these awesome books!
christinbanda@yahoo.com
I havent done a reading challenge but like you I couldnt get through Jane Austin even though I want to and LOVE the movies.
Yea!!! Books!!!
I have never done a reading challenge. I love to read, though!
Are you sick of white and feeling blue?
Then this is what you need to do.
Check out my "Gobs of Green" giveaway.
If you win, it will make your day!
Yep I've done a couple of reading challenges, currently reading Fiona Walker - Snap Happy which is alot of fun.
Pop over to mine for a chance at 6 prizes of Jewelry, Make-up & Perfume!
I'm currently challenging myself to read the list from The Well Trained Mind. It's all the books you should have read to be an educated person, but didn't. This may take me several years though. I get side-tracked reading other stuff.
Right now I'm reading The Scarlet Pimpernel. And a biography of Alice Waters.
I did a reading challenge in elementary school...and won. Does that count? lol
I like to read a bunch of different things but I read "Chic Lit" the most just because they're easy reads.
Right now I'm reading a book having to do with infertility. I can't remember the name of it and I'm too lazy to go find it. I just finished The Breakdown Lane though. It was good but it took me awhile to get into it. A really slow read. And I'm still not sure if it was a true story or not. LOL
I used to love to read! I just haven't had the time to find a good book since my three boys were born. This would make my day to get some new books that have been pre-read to make sure I'm not wasting my time.
I'm trying to read 20 classics this year. There are a few books here that I have been meaning to read.
dcavw@hotmail.com
Oh, awesome! I read your site a lot but rarely comment... anyway, this giveaway is excellent! I'm entering even though I have an (un?)fortunate habit of buying books even when I have tons of unread ones on my shelf. Luckily the library next door to me sells bestsellers for 50 cents! Also, I've been dying to read "Living Biblically."
suburbansweetheart(at)gmail(dot)com
I love to read and also have a book list on my blog of the books I have read this year. I will read about anything.
I am loving Spring Fling.
Thanks
Fabulous giveaway! I love reading.
I'm currently reading the Kurt Wallander mysteries. Great books!
Happy Fling Fling!
What a wonderful giveaway! I LOVE reading! I've been reading a lot of vampire books lately! LOL I just finished Untamed by PC and Kristen Cast.
I haven't read a whole grown up book in at least a year. Yay for the Spring Fling!
Love anything to do with reading, challenges, and books! Right now i'm reading The heart Is A Lonely hunter, The Alchemist, and Lady Chatterly's Lover!
Ten books? Cool!
I love books! I read a lot of romance...need to escape somehow!
I totally want to read the living a year biblically...i've thumbed through it
It's because of you that I'm doing the 999 Challenge this year. I'm so excited to do this and it's all because of you. :)
OH YEA! Right now I'm reading the book about the girls who were mistakenly identified in the hospital. I LOVE biographies, especially autos. But I like lots of stuff.
I usually read about a book every 2 weeks..but I homeschool too.
I LOVE to read. I just finished a book and I'm planning to read one book a week this year. I can read pretty quickly, so I don't think that will be a problem...now watch life shoot me in the foot!
I also used to be a big reader until I found blogging. I love Jane Austen but she's obviously not for you:-)
Thanks for the giveaway!
this is a great giveaway, especially since my whole blog is about books!
sports dot erikalynn at gmail dot com
What a nice giveaway, pick me! LOL!
Nice giveaway...I'd love to get my hands on the Charlaine Harris one. I recently tried to read Pride and Prejudice (cause I'd been way too obsessed with Twilight and wanted to read something truly cultured :P) Anyway, I decided halfway through the book that I didn't really give a rat's butt about any of them and gave it up.
I've always loved to read, ever since I...well...learned to read. In grade school, I would check out several Hardy Boys or Nancy Drew books, and I'd start one as soon as I got home and only stop for dinner (if I wasn't done already).
I still read, slowly checking books out from the library. I don't get as much time to read as I'd like. I have too many other things filling my time, like work, tv and blogging. I try to read for 15-30 minutes every day, but that doesn't always happen.
I love romance novels that you can go through rather quickly. But I also love biographies. I recently read one about Margaret Thatcher, and have also read a very thick book about Alexander Hamilton. I do love mysteries too.
Awesome! I love books.
OOOOH! ME-EE-EEEE!
I'm kind of a book slut!
I did return The Year Of Living Biblically to the library unfinished because I though it was stupid. The whole premise. But it's the only one I attempted in that pile....
I LOVE reading!!! I don't mind reading any type of genre, as long as the writing can pull me in. For example, the cover of this one book wasn't interesting, but the first paragraph hooked me till the end. You have to read Undone by Brooke Taylor :)
sena.sagani[at]gmail[dot]com
have you read 'wake'? i have it on my shelf right now, but keep overlooking it for others. also, 'the host' was awesome.
I love to read almost as much as you do - I haven't been able to read a book a day since I had kids. I am currently reading Dummies Guide to currency trading and The Other Sister by Jodi Picoult. I am also listening to Animal Farm by George Orwell.
Reading Challenge - Yes, not NEARLY as ambitious as yours ... as in 25 books a year (kiddie books don't count) and Bible in a year etc.
I love historical fiction - get lost in it.
I am reading The Seamstress - set in the 20's in Brazil - so far so good.
You didn't ask but my favorite book might be Crossing to Safety by Wallace Stegner.
So this my dear is a great giveaway!!!
I do reading challenges all of the time! My favorite books are mysteries. I also enjoy some of the paranormal books especially witch & fairy & then a little sci-fi. Oh & I just started reading young adult books & really enjoying a lot of them. Those tend to be paranormal.
I award you the SISTERHOOD AWARD for going above and beyond bloggy goodness. Pick it up at
http://theysayimnuts.blogspot.com/2009/03/sisterhood-award.html
You are the "readin-ist" reader I know! Yesterday I was trying to talk Alyssa in to starting Harry Potter. She was complaining because it was long. I told her that when I read it, I wanted to read all day and all night and not stop. She said, "Well....that's cuz you're a READER reader. I'm just a reader." LOL!! Oh it was funny. And WHY, for the love of Pete, aren't you on Goodreads.com?
I've never done a reading challenge but it sounds right up my alley! Thanks so much for this giveaway. The books you are offering look like great reads!
I love to read. For pleasure and entertainment mostly. If I learn something that is just a bonus I guess. I like a good escape! I just got Water for Elephants at Goodwill I plan on starting it this week. How is the hubby?
Right on girl! I can't wait to start reading again. Maybe some new well loved books will be just the ticket to tempt me... lol
I love to read too. I have never done a reading challenge; however, I always have a book by my nightstand. I read mostly fiction. Adriana Trigiani is one of my favorite authors and I am currently reading "Very Valentine."
