I am quite above average. Strawberries are my favorite. They are a great snack. Side dish. Dessert. Food to eat all the time. For me anyway. Love 'em. So...when our local strawberry fields open for picking...I'm there. We usually pick two buckets of berries...and can easily polish them off in a week...and then be back at the fields for another picking session.
On Friday, I took Katie and her friend Diana to Washington Farms to pick berries.

You have to be careful when picking the berries - and be sure to not bother the flowers. They will eventually ripen into more berries. You can see the berry forming in the center of the white flower - and the berries forming in other buds in these photos..jpg)

My mom used to make us go and pick strawberries every year. In Florida. In April/May. So hot. I think we ate more than we picked. She also made us pick blueberries, and I don't really like blueberries.
She would also try to make jam, but it would never turn out very well. I think one year we had 40 containers of wonderful ice cream topping, because the jam never set up!
We used to live in Florida...and I remember picking berries in Plant City. Yum. But the season was much earlier...Strawberry festivals at the end of February. Here the season is April/May...and by the first of June they are all gone.
We just eat our berries. I don't like strawberries any other way. I am actually going to try my hand at freezing some because my girls love strawberry smoothies. We'll see how that turns out!
yummy! i have a great dip for strawberries-- so easy- 1/2 container of coolwhip, sugar-free cheese- cake pudding mix, 8oz cream cheese. Let it chill and get thick! hey, can you send me some of those berries??? hahaha thanks for the idea
Joye--Yum. Everyone here loves cheesecake (except me - and I'm quite thankful that I do not have this vice. I just think about how much bigger my hips might be!) - and I'll have to try this out. Or I can have Katie whip it up!

Oh, those look so yummy! There's a huge strawberry field accross the street from our house. Unfortunately, it's not a U-pick place (but it is awfully tempting ;) We still have a few weeks before they're in season here and we can't wait.
We have a u-pick-em strawberry farm near here and we love to go berry pickin'. It's organic so the kids eat just as many as they pick. Very fun.
We had strawberries at lunch today but they were store bought and didn't look near as good as these!

Thanks you guys. I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one with an affliction...err...affection for strawberries! (The ones we picked on Friday - almost all gone...never even made the smoothies...just over 48 hours...maybe affliciton is the better word!)
I cannot get enough of strawberries lately although they aren't as fresh as yours. My latest craving every morning is strawberries over my Kashi Go Lean cereal. Yumm Yum!

The conjoined berries, I have heard a different version, that if you picked a conjoined berry you are likely to give birth to twins!
Yummmmmmm. How wonderful to get to pick your own! I've picked blackberries and blueberries and apples before, but not strawberries. Guess I need to find out if anyone in Texas is growing strawberries. =)

That used to be one of my favourite activities, going to the PYO frms and filling the boot full of punnets fresh berries...
And no, I didn't fill my boots up :-)
