Shades of Beige

A few months our next door neighbors had the trim and siding to their house painted white. What an amazing difference it made. Naturally, I began to plot and plan my way to new trim. I wanted white, too. But really...did we want to paint our cream siding white? And make upkeep when we didn't have any?

The answer is no. But...I wanted to get rid of the horrid brown trim. And lighten things up with a cream color to match the siding. And maybe paint the shutters. But my first step was to match the color of the siding to the new trim color.

And this matching. Well...do you know how many shades of beige there are?

I think it just might be an infinite number. There are beiges in the green family. In the blue family. In the pink family. In the orange family. In the yellow family. Not too many just in the beige family.

And they all have great names. Like Parachute silk. Riviera Beach. Venetian Mask. Cafe Cream. Heavy Cream. Deep Cream. Plateau. Little Linda. Tuolumme. Which I can't even begin to pronounce. Coastal Beige. Eternal beige. Architectural beige.

So many choices. I wonder who has the cool job of coming up with color names. And why they felt that Little Linda was a shade of beige.

So...what about you? What color is the trim of your house? What about your shutters and front door?

Oh my word, I could have written this post! Except, it's my walls I'm trying to match beige too. And my house is red brick w/white siding and black shutters. My front door is white and for the last 2 years I've wanted to paint it something fun. But I'm afraid since the shutters are black, my only choise is black. And I really don't want a black door. I drive around all the time looking at front doors, just to see if maybe I can get an idea. So far no luck. I think I'm stuck with white. I wish I was creative and crafty and a good decorator so I could have a cool front door. Good luck with that trim!

I posted a picture of my house yesterday, but it's brick with white trim/gutters/front door and a brown-reddish color on the shutters.

They really, really need to be repainted but I cannot decide what color to use. I'm so horrible at stuff like that. My neighbors have a red door that I LOVE but I don't want to be a copy cat, plus there's still the matter of the shutters.

I welcome your advice...

As for the color names, I'd say having that job is just as strange as working for Hallmark. How do you even get into those professions?

It must be fun to come up with those names. Egyptian Sand. Hamseen Wind. Brilliant Beige! Oh wait... they're all teh exact same shade! LOL

Doesn't Plateau sound spectacular? Our trim is some sort of grey. I looked at color swatches and picked. But the interior trim is Frost. I've used that same white trim color for about 100 years from Home Depot, so it is deeply ingrained into this brain.

My house is the perfect shade of green. I don't know what the name is because it was already painted when we bought it, but it was so much better than the blue that it was in the pictures from the realtor. I looked, it's somewhere near Kilz's Mint Jelly or Green Room. Just barely not white trim on shutters, trim and wrap-around porch posts. Deck and porch are natural wood. Door is Polished Maple (colorplace from Walmart), which I did after we moved in - it was white and so ugly. I love the colors so much that when I see them I totally forget about the mountain of stuff we are still working on inside.

I bet the Lindas out there are really upset that they've been eternally tied to a shade of beige and will forever be short and tiny. I sure hope all the bright, cheerful colors are called "Magnificent Michelle."

Oh yeah, and my house colors are mostly white, some gray trim and shutters and my front door is a peach-y color.

My house is blue-grey with white trim and cranberry shutters. The shingles on the roof are black, blue, and cranberry. My house is so cute! I luuuuuurve it!

I never thought I'd have such a beautiful house! In fact, I wasn't sure if I'd ever own a house. We were apartment dwellers for a loooooong time!

we have a blue house with purple or more maroon shutters and white trim. I love it!

I want to paint our bedroom a nice robin's egg blue BUT it's not that simple. LOL

The trim of our house is a dark plumish color as well as the shutters and front door. I didn't think I'd like it but it goes really well with the main color of our house, a light gray.

We've got 2 trim colors. The door and shutters are black and the section over the small bay window is maroon. The house is brick. I'd rather the shutters and door match the maroon, but it isn't our choice as we rent.

my igloo is white! ;-0
just kidding!

but we live in a nasty brown ugly fourplex. it really makes me appreciate more the adorable little house that I own in Vancouver!

paint colors always stump me. I am so bad at picking them out, they all look the same to me, and I guess I just don't care that much about what color something is. So good luck to ya!

Our house is boring. White with brown trim. Brown roof. White door. I kind of like it though because it is a good back drop for my gardens:-)

I always go through this when I want to paint rooms.
Our house is tri-color red brick, unusual, with dark green shutters, beige trim let's call it coffee with cream, and sandy-green colored windows. It works!!

Where in the heck did "Little Linda" come from?! "Parachute Silk" is kinda cool, though.

I think the trim on my house is white. Is it sad that I'm not 100% sure about that?! But I do know the color of the shutters and front door... maroon!

It's funny, when I was reading through the list of color names, Little Linda is the one that jumped out at me. I'm betting the color namer has a daughter/niece/girlfriend named Linda.

Our trim is white (as is our house) but our shutters are black. I've been contemplating painting the door. Maybe red. But like you, it seems like it's creating maintenance issues where none now exist. (It's a steel pre-painted door.)

Little Linda is a shade of beige?

Poor Linda!

The trim of my house is...white.
The doors and shutters are...black.

Girl, you know I am all kinds of traditional.

Every house in my neighborhood is a different shade of vanilla. I would love a beige house. And, yeah, all those different shades make me crazy because I chose beige for the inside of my house and trying to find one that wasn't too pink, or too green, or too orange almost did me in.

Hehe, I know about those shades of colors. I used to live in a Pepto Bismol house. Seriously. The people who owned it prior to me painted the outside and inside - PINK - pink trim, pink walls, pink everything. It was enough to make me sick - first thing I did - PAINT.

When Greg and I picked out paint for the renovated office room, he made the comment, "These are female colors. Why don't they have colors like - BEER or FOOTBALL." Lol

My house is a BEIGE color that we will never be able to match because I don't have the color thing anymore lol. I want to paint it a darker tan-brown color I think.

The trim is a dark green.

White. But in the back the trim around the back door is kind of a cream to match the door. The trim is in bad need of stripping and repainting. I think I'm going to go with white when I finally get around to it.

I'm actually gonna remember to ANSWER your questions!!! Our trim is stained some dark color that took my sister-in-law (a decorator) and the paint guy a while to come up with....you know ( I did not)...."you don't want your hard wood floors to be the same exact color as your trim??????" Who knew! Silly me! No shutters and the front door is stained Black Walnut. Okay, those questions were easy!!!!!! Soooooo, what'd ya decide on????

Brian and Staci said...

Oh yea...and just curious....whose job is it to have to come up with alllll those paint names????? I'd go CRAZY!!!!!

Brian and Staci said...

Okaaaay...so, totally just skipped over the part in your post about you wondering who had the job of coming up with naming colors!!! Guess I just skipped right to the questions :)

I had a friend, that once worked for a huge fabric firm. She said they would start at 5:00 pm and bring in all of the samples into a huge room. Then they had the 6 people that were in charge of colors come in. They would make huge pitchers of Martini's and then after about three, they started. She said, this could go on for many hours. Some of them would be passed out in places in the room. The remaining were seriously beyond help. One would look at a fabric and yell "Egyptian Sunset" and that was the name. They didn't leave the room, until, all were named and all needed a lot of help leaving. As they each rode a taxi home, they had made the names of the new colors for that season.

The only "little Linda" I know is a blonde tattoo artist and pin-up model - perhaps the color is the same as her skin and hair?
A lot of synonymes to beige refer to skin/leather and beach, sand, desert and dunes... it's not only the color of dishwater and old rags :-D
