Friday Follies: A little Figgy Pudding

It's Friday. And you know what that means? It's the last day of school until the new year. It's the launch of the weekend. And it's the last day to enter to win my huge Disney prize pack. Oh...and it's time for our Friday Follies!

Today's guest inquisitor is Shannon from Welcome to the Nuthouse. I met Shannon IRL way back in October. (Am I the only one that feels like I have known you guys for forever? When really...it hasn't been that long.) When we took this infamous photo. And now Shannon is ready to ask all the questions for today's Follies...

I've decided to go with a theme that is near and dear to my heart... FOOD! So here are a few questions pertaining to traditional holiday fare:

Do you make a gingerbread house? From scratch or do you use a pre-made kit?

How do you like your hot chocolate: with or without mini marshmallows?

What kind of cookies do you leave out for Santa? Do you leave anything for the reindeer?

Do you know what wassail is?

Will you be dreaming of sugarplums on Christmas Eve?

Do you like fruitcake? Have you ever given or received a fruitcake as a gift?

Have you ever had mincemeat pie? What IS mincemeat???

Do you drink your eggnog spiked?

Turkey or ham? Stuffing or dressing?

What is your favorite holiday food? What is your least favorite?

I get to be first to answer my own questions??? ...sweet!

We make a gingerbread house... using pre-made kit, of course. Do you really think I have the patience to make one from scratch??

most definitely WITH mini marshmallows!

Whatever is available... I'm pretty sure last year we left Oreos. And we leave carrots for the reindeer.

some kind of spiced cider... but I've never had any wassail

No... I will be dreaming of hopefully opening a new camera on Christmas morning!

I have actually never tried fruitcake... but I will take a good guess that I would not like it. And no I've never given or received a fruitcake as a gift.

I don't eat pie of any kind, let alone mincemeat... whatever it is!!!

I don't drink eggnog, but if I did, I would so want it spiked!

ham and stuffing

Its hard to turn down Christmas cookies... those would be my favorite, I guess. Least favorite would prolly be yams/sweet potato casserole.

And yes... it does seem as if we have known each other since forever! Seriously, it's only been OCTOBER since we've met IRL??!!?!?! No way!!!!

Shannon said...

And yes... we will go down in infamy.

I wouldn't have it any other way.

O.M.G. Could I be MORE excited that today is the last day of school for 2.5 weeks? I could hardly sleep last night for the JOY!

I bought a $9 kit from Wally World for the first time this year, and let it be a boy activity because it seemed like a Daddy thing. They had a blast and it is super cute and Noah only ate half of the candy!

with mini marshmallows

We leave a variety plate and a glass of milk. The reindeer get carrots in the front yard.

no idea

wine maybe. No sugarplums.

I tried fruitcake once. Gross!

no mincemeat pie. I have no idea what it even is.

I don't drink eggnog.

Rib roast this year, I think. That's my husband's job. Probably twice baked potatoes. No stuffing. Or dressing. Probably.

Favorite? I could make a loooong list. Peanut butter balls. Spinach dip with bread. Cheeseball and crackers. Homemade Chex Mix. Not really a fan of peanut brittle. My desserts must involve chocolate.

Do you make a gingerbread house? From scratch or do you use a pre-made kit? We can't have GB.. unless it's gluten free and it's just not the same.

How do you like your hot chocolate: with or without mini marshmallows? W/O but like whipped cream on top!

What kind of cookies do you leave out for Santa? Do you leave anything for the reindeer?
Sugar cookies (there is good gf for those)

Do you know what wassail is? Yes, have it every year at the inlaws.

Will you be dreaming of sugarplums on Christmas Eve? Nope, just my family and happiness/world peace.

Do you like fruitcake? Have you ever given or received a fruitcake as a gift? If it's the British kind, yes. And yes, I have received a few of the yucky kind.

Have you ever had mincemeat pie? What IS mincemeat??? Yes, It's fat, booze, fruit, and sometimes I like to add venison (if we have any).

Do you drink your eggnog spiked? Only way to drink it!

Turkey or ham? Stuffing or dressing?
Neither, Roast Beef and Yorkshire Pudding.

What is your favorite holiday food?
Only one? Ack! I can't pick one...
Greek wedding cookies, meat and pudding, mashed sweet potatoes, black olive salad, and all the wonderful red wine!

What is your least favorite? None that we serve, elsewhere oyster stew with those little crackers. I love oysters, but not in a runny stew.

Let's see...

1. I have neither made nor purchased a gingerbread house.

2. hot chocolate = mint schnapps or whipped cream or both! :p

3. Growing up we left peanut butter cookies. The reindeer got nada.

4. Olden times for: Woo hoo?

5. Only if i drink enough. :)

6. Not a fan. Sorry granny! *shame*

7. I like mincemeat pies. We used to get them from Marks and Spensers.

8. I like mine pure, oddly enough.

9. Turkey and stuffing.

10. I'm a fat girl: all food is my favourite food. :p

Heather said...

1. Not this year. If I do, it's a premade kit. That frosting is a bee-yatch.

2. Mini marshmallows all the way. And some bigger ones thrown in with 'em.

3. Usually choc chip. They're Santa's favorite, dontcha know?
And we have "reindeer food" made of oats and glitter that we sprinkle in the lawn.

4. Nope. What is wassail?

5. I only dream of Edward Cullen.

6. Never. I would take it as an insult to get fruitcake.

7. Yuck.

8. Don't like eggnog.

9. Turkey. With stuffing. And extra gravy.

10. Broccoli and cauliflour with homemade cheese sauce is my fave. Creamy corn is my least.

I heart Josh Groban. Man, can that boy croon!

Oh, Shannon...Shannon, Shannon, Shannon...I love that you chose food-related questions. It makes me happy.

So here I go:

I have never made a gingerbread house. Ever.

Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate from Starbucks is how I like my hot chocolate. No marshmallows, please.

We leave decorated sugar cookies for Santa, and carrots for his reindeer.

Of course I know what wassail is. I'm making some tonight, in fact.

I do not care for sugarplums, but now that you've brought this up I'll most likely dream of them. When y'all know all I really want to dream of is Jason.

Fruitcake=satan. The end.

I have never had mincemeat pie. Ever.

I love me some spiked stuff, but NOT eggnog. I like the alcohol-free Southern Comfort brand, though. FANTSTIC!

Turkey. Turkey, turkey, turkey. And no self-respecting southerner would ever call it "stuffing," or even make "stuffing." It's dressing. Cornbread dressing. And my 100 year old recipe will kick any of your arses. I'm that confident in it, yes. :)

Favorite holiday food? All of it. Hence my 9-day detoxing cleanse that begins January 2. I dread it already.

Unknown said...

We make them out of graham crackers... LOTS of fun.

With whipped cream!!!!

Sugar cookies in the shape of Santa for Santa (just a little sick humor there) and Carrots for the reindeer.

Yes

I'll be dreaming of MY sugarplum.

It's okay. My grandpa used to send us one every year. I prefer Yule Kag - Danish Christmas Bread.

Nope and don't know.

I drink my eggnog any way I can take it.

Well since I was just given a Turkey yesterday I guess we'll go with that... and dressing please.

Favorite - Fondue or Cheese balls or Lefse. Least favorite? Lutefisk.

Kori said...

We have made Gingerbread houses in the past. One year we blinfolded the boys and we gave them directions on what to do. It was hilarious and very interesting. Good times.

Love whipped cream on my hot chocolate but marshmallows are good too.

Usually oatmeal raisin. Don't you know those are Santas favorite. As far as reindeer just before the sun goes down we go out and sprinkle the front yard with reindeer food. (glitter and dry oatmeal) And then we leave carrots in the house.

I haven't a clue what wassail is. Guess I could go google it. But really I'm not up to it.

I'm usually up late so when I do dream it is interesting. So maybe.

I like fruitcake cookies. My MIL gives a fruitcake every year that she made. I however have never given one.

Um no mincemeat here whatever that is.

I like eggnog whether it's spiked ot not.

I like turkey and ham. And I am a dressing kind of girl.

Um favorite holiday food would have to be the desserts. Especially the chocolate ones. Least favorite. I don't know I'm not very picky.

Thanks again Shannon for the faboolas questions!

I have never made a gingerbread house. I sent Madalyn to the young Chef's Academy in November for two days to make one from scratch. The kitties ate it.

I am not fond of marshmallows. And I have got to try the Starbucks hot chocolate. When it gets cold. Cause I still can't believe we are all in shorts today.

Santa's favorites are Toll House Chocolate chip cookies. And that is what we leave for him. And some milk. I usually forget about the reindeer. Maybe Santa shares his cookies.

Of course I do.

I don't know. Maybe. I never remember my dreams.

Nope. Yuck. When Michael and I got married...the ladies in the church brought all these desserts for our dessert buffet. And one of them was chocolate covered fruitcake. That they insisted I try. Blech. I have not received fruite cake as a gift.

Nope. And I know since the Ridge School filled us in on its contents.

I don't like eggnog at all. But...my eggnog bread is delish. That I do like.

Honeybaked ham. And stuffing. I guess I am not a true Southerner ya'll :-) But...we have decided to grill steaks for Christmas this year. Along with grilled asparagus. And PW's twice baked potatoes. Yum.

Peanut butter pie. Or broccoli rice casserole. Don't like stuffing. Or sweet potatoes.

Mama Dawg said...

Do you make a gingerbread house? From scratch or do you use a pre-made kit? Nope. We did one year and I about screamed in frustration.

How do you like your hot chocolate: with or without mini marshmallows? I don't do hot chocolate unless it's the high priced variety. I'm a hot chocolate snob. Sorry! And w/out marshmallows.

What kind of cookies do you leave out for Santa? Do you leave anything for the reindeer? We leave out something other than cookies. One year it was a sandwich, one year it was cheese grits, one year it was sausage pinwheels. We also leave out some sort of veggie or fruit for the reindeer.

Do you know what wassail is? Yep.

Will you be dreaming of sugarplums on Christmas Eve? Nope.

Do you like fruitcake? Have you ever given or received a fruitcake as a gift? Can't stand the stuff and I once gave it as a gag gift.

Have you ever had mincemeat pie? What IS mincemeat??? Nope and I have no clue. I could google it for you!

Do you drink your eggnog spiked? Nope.

Turkey or ham? Stuffing or dressing? Ughh....neither to both.

What is your favorite holiday food? What is your least favorite?

My mom's cheese grits. Yucky ham or dressing or apricot salad.

Rhea said...

I going to Kat's house for Christmas...steaks, asparagus and potatoes. PERFECT.

Rhea said...

I have never made a gingerbread house, and I'm ashamed to say it. I want to. I plan on it. Soon. One day.

I like marshmallows in my hot chocolate.

We usually leave sugar cookies or chocolate chip for Santa, plus carrots for the reindeer.

Wassail...is that some kind of cider?

I don't even know what sugarplums are. I actually like plums though. Especially the ones with cherries in them. delicious.

I don't think I've ever had fruitcake, and I don't feel the need to ever eat it...or receive it, I hope.

I have no idea what mincemeat pie is.

I've never had eggnog.

I love turkey and ham. And steaks.

I love the traditional meals...and all the cookies. LOVE sweet potatoes.

Brandy said...

The only gingerbread house I have made was with my nephew last year. It was a milk carton with graham crackers that he decorated.

I'll take either, but I prefer with.

Whatever I have on hand. Yes I've left reindeer food, which was oatmeal and glitter.

No idea

I don't think so.

Fruitcake is okay. It's gotten a pretty bad rap so I have neither given it or received it.

No and IDK.

Sometimes.

Both-preferrably ham and we call it stuffing although it was never stuffed into anything.

It's so hard to choose just one...how about a category - desserts! I don't make anything I don't like although I don't really eat cranberry sauce and I avoided the sweet potatoes this year.

ChicagoLady said...

I've never made a gingerbread house. I don't even like gingerbread cookies.

I LOVE my hot chocolate with any kind of marshmallows, mini or regular sized.

I never left anything out for Santa as a kid.

Wassail is like caroling, right?

If I were to dream of sugar plums, they would probably be giant sugar plums, and they'd be chasing me or something freaky like that.

I hate fruitcake, but I've given it many times as a gift. My one aunt makes her own fruitcake (with lots of booze) and I used to send it to my other aunt and uncle who thought it was the best they'd ever had.

I've never had mincemeat pie. My grandmother would bring one for Thanksgiving, but not for Christmas.

I've had spiked eggnog, but I prefer is straight out of the carton.

I like both Turkey and Ham, but I have neither for Christmas. I spend my Christmas with Italians, so they naturally make Italian dishes.

My favorite holiday food? Or Christmas food? Chocolate of course! It wins 365 days of the year! Least favorite would be anything with mushrooms or onions.

I'm not late today--nope, nope, nope! (and really Kat? You didn't catch the whole I went to California to see my new boyfriend the mystery man post?!?! :) )

1. pre made kit. even then it's not a pretty sight ;)

2.with. or better yet, a spoonful of marshmallow creme.

3.I leave whatever MY favorite cookies are, this year probably mint chip. and if we happen to have carrots around we'll leave them out for reindeer.

4.yes. similar to mulled cider, right? but I think there's wine involved too.

5.maybe?

6.thank heavens no!

7.I know mincemeat involves nuts and spices. I don't think that there's really any meat in it. But what do I know :)?!

8.nope

9.ham. stuffing.

10. favorite=everything that comes out only around this time of year. Chocolate and peppermint stuff, Dan Cakes from Cost Plus, anything wrapped in pancetta. Least favorite= "holiday versions" of candy that's around all year. i.e. Reeses shaped like a tree! Seems pointless to me :)!

Carrie said...

I've made lots of gingerbread houses (even a gingerbread train station for a competition once), but none this year. Always, always, ALWAYS from scratch!

Thanks to Lula, I now like my hot cocoa with salted caramel from Starbucks.

No cookies for Santa, yet. The midget's still too little to realize.

Yep, I know what wassail is and I go a'Wassailing sometimes also.

I've made sugarplums before and they are DELICIOUS! You poke a whole clove in the end and then most of the little bite of heaven tastes like cloves! YUM!

I like my fruitcake like I like my men--with LOTS of nuts! Did I just write that? I buy my husband a fruitcake every year for his Christmas stocking. He *hearts* fruitcake big time!

I've eaten mincemeat pie made from homemade mincemeat (from venison). I use to think it was gross until I tasted it. Then I thought it was uber-gross!! I can see why people like it, but I'm not a big fan.

I am a total eggnog whore! You can find me hooking for it down on Woodward in Detroit. And as far as spiked or non-spiked--I could care less. I love it either way.

For Christmas, we have an alternate meat like Prime Rib or Lamb. No stuffing or dressing with either.

I love pretty much all holiday food. Hence my fat-ness...

Elena said...

Do you make a gingerbread house? From scratch or do you use a pre-made kit? A kit, but I skipped the whole thing this year.

How do you like your hot chocolate: with or without mini marshmallows? With LOTS

What kind of cookies do you leave out for Santa? Do you leave anything for the reindeer? Snickerdoodles and sugar cookies, and the reindeer get oats with glitter sprinkled on the ground so they can sse the shimmer.

Do you know what wassail is? I think so, spicy apple cidery drink.

Will you be dreaming of sugarplums on Christmas Eve? Ha! If only, I'll be up all night helping Santa.

Do you like fruitcake? Have you ever given or received a fruitcake as a gift? Not a huge fan, but my MIL makes it every year.

Have you ever had mincemeat pie? What IS mincemeat???Nope

Do you drink your eggnog spiked? Nope

Turkey or ham? Stuffing or dressing? Ham on Christmas, and stuffing mixed with dressing. The best of both worlds.

What is your favorite holiday food? What is your least favorite? Fudge and toffee- least fav.= hard candies

Linda said...

Last year we made a kit gingerbread house. Quick and easy. Years past I've made the whole darn thing from scratch. Frustratingly fun.

WITH mini marshmallows of course.

We leave some sort of cutout sugar cookie and Mexican wedding cakes. And a piece of cheese. We leave magic oats out on the lawn for the reindeer. And a carrot for Rudolph. We get a lot of fog here so we assume Rudolph always comes!

Wassail ... kinda like Swedish Glogg. Make it every year!

No sugarplums, no fruitcake, no mincemeat. Blech.

Eggnog ... definitely spiked!

No turkey, no ham ... prime rib with Yorkshire puddings.

Everything on my dinner table is my favorite holiday food! I don't make anything I don't love!

Gladys said...

Do you make a gingerbread house? From scratch or do you use a pre-made kit?
When I used to make them i made my own

How do you like your hot chocolate: with or without mini marshmallows? Without. I have my own special recipe that includes a nip of peppermint schnapps.

What kind of cookies do you leave out for Santa? Do you leave anything for the reindeer?

Since I no longer have little kids I just eat the cookies and feed the dogs whatever goodies I have.

Do you know what wassail is?

Isn't that when you get in a boat with sheets hanging from it? You know "Me and Bubba, wassail on his boat on laundry day whilst the sheets dry."

Will you be dreaming of sugarplums on Christmas Eve?

Of course, sugarplums, rum cake, snickerdoodles, etc..

Do you like fruitcake? Have you ever given or received a fruitcake as a gift?

Not a big fruitcake fan. I have made and given them to my daddy for years. He loves fruitcake.

Have you ever had mincemeat pie? What IS mincemeat???

Do you drink your eggnog spiked?

Turkey or ham? Stuffing or dressing?

I'm allergic to pork so it will be Turkey and it stuffin. (I'm from Texas and we don't put that weird stuff in it. It's made with cornbread.

What is your favorite holiday food? What is your least favorite?
Lease favorite? I don't understand your question.

We've made Gingerbread houses for the past 3 years...and when I say made...they come right out of the old box from Target! It's still fun!
I REFUSE to drink hot chocolate without some kind of marshmallow in it! Mine requires AT least 50 mini marshmallows (maybe more...now that I'm thinking about it...maybe 50 isn't alot when they are mini??) AND whipping cream! YUM! (I also have to keep reloading my hot chocolate with marshmallows until there is a nice mixture of at least 2 marshmallows with each sip :) I know that is waaay more information than you needed...but you asked :) And I do take my hot chocolate seriously!

Any kind that we have...we also leave carrots for the reindeer and a piece of cheese for Santa Mouse!

Yes!

NO WAY! Have never given it either!

NO...not sure. I'm not a huge meat-eater so sounds disgusting to me :)

Don't drink eggnog :(

Turkey, dressing

Too hard---I love all the cookies and sweet treats :) Jellied cranberry stuff----too jiggly for me thanks!

1. From "scratch?" Does anyone know what that means anymore?

2. Either, but never the big one - they bump your nose.

3. Alas - that was years ago. Our Santa is on a diet.

4. Had some Monday night.

5. Depends upon what I ate the evening before.

6. NO! NO! NO! -- YES! YES! YUCK!

8. No

9. Both, and neither

10. 4th of July Steak Stuffing

We have made gingerbread houses before (not this year, though) - all from kits.

Depends on the hot cocoa. I *love* Starbucks peppermint hot cocoa, which doesn't have marshmallows. If I'm drinking homemade (yes, I make my own mix ;) then I definitely have marshmallows.

Yes, we leave cookies out for Santa - but the reindeer get squat.

Yes, I do!

No, I don't think I've *ever* dreamed of sugarplums ;)

I HATE fruitcake. I've only received it once, way back when I was married to my practice husband. He loved it. Just one of many reasons we were not compatible *snort*

Nope, never had it. I'm afraid to ask what's in it!

Not spiked, but I do like it with a bit of nutmeg sprinkled on top.

Neither, I'm a vegetarian.

Favorite holiday food: fudge
Least favorite: fruitcake

You just made me realize that my aunt and uncle didn't send us a gingerbread house this year to make. Bummer! We usually do but not from scratch.

No marshmallows. It's a texture issue.

Whatever cookies we have in the house :) And yes, the reindeer get carrots.

Yes, I do :)

I hope so. If I am, that means I'm in a deep enough sleep to dream, and that's all I'm asking for this year!

Yuck yuck yuck -- thankfully no on both counts!

Nope I haven't. And I hope it isn't what I think it is :) I actually did read a recipe for it years ago, but I don't remember the details.

You betcha! And not spiked, too. I just like egg nog.

Ham. I don't like turkey any time of year. Stuffing.

Ooo favorite? Bunsteads. But that's an us tradition. Least favorite is pumpkin pie or turkey or cranberry sauce or ....

Mmm .. Foooood

Never gingerbread, but my friends and I made graham cracker houses. It was a lot of fun. =-) We never ate them, though .. they were too cute.

With, please and thank you =-)

Nope .. makes me think of nun's clothing .. or quails. Maybe a nun's hat made from quail feathers. But wait, this is about food .. so yeah, nope no idea.

Sugarplums? Heck no .. *puke* I take my plums straight, and I don't eat them at Christmas.

I've never eaten fruitcake. Just the look of it makes my nose scrunch. I'm kinda shallow when it comes to my food.

Meat + Pie = *vomit* .. like I said, Shallow

I had my first spiked eggnog last night. And me likey =-)

Turkey .. with stuffing .. Stove Top, for reals. MmM

Snowman Poop. I have a hard time justifying it during the year, but at Christmas it's totally appropriate. And fattening. Which is also holiday appropriate. =-)

Least favorite? Cranberry sauce .. again, I've never had it .. totally shallow.

I have a Pampered Chef mold for my gingerbread house. I love it but also threaten to fling it from the roof every year.

Hot chocolate with marshmallows, but right now it's the Peppermint Mocha Twist at Starbucks. It's minty caffinated hot cocoa. Yum!

We used to leave what ever was in the house for Santa. The reindeer got carrots. Cheap trick if you ask me. They're fullig the fat man and they get diet food? How about a protein shake?

Not only do I know what wassail is, I now have a song about it stuck in my head. Wassail, wassail all over the town. Our toast it is white and our ale it is brown...

Hopefully I will be so deeply asleep, I will not know what I dreamt about.

Not sure I've ever had it...

Mincemeat... ew. I know it's not really meat, but sweat breads aren't bread either, and we all know what THEY are.

I do not 'nog. I prefer my eggs scrambled, thank you.

Ham for Christmas. To suggest otherwise will make your wife angry seeing as how you've already agreed to put bacon on your turkey at Thanksgiving... Oh, wait, that was Hubby.

Least would be the 'nog. Most? Um... Rigt now it would be mulled cider. Ask again later and it will probably be different.

4. No idea. Do tell!
5. Gagcake more like it!
6. Gagmeat pie more like it!
7. Gagnog more like it!
8. Turkey & Stuffing! Yummy!

My favorite holiday food is any that I get to share with my family!
