Quite quotable

"Reading is one form of escape. Running away and screaming is another." -- Lemony Snicket

I have always loved a good quote. And just the other day I had such a moment of nostalgia as I ran across my journal from college. Where I listed all of my favorite quotes of the moment. It is full of poetry. Everything from Ogden Nash to Shelley. Blake to Poe. It has lines from books. Lines from movies. Including this gem from Woody Allen's "Love and Death:

"To love is to suffer. To avoid suffering, one must not love. But then one must suffer from not loving. Therefore, to love is to suffer. To suffer is to suffer. To be happy is to love. To be happy then is to suffer. But suffering makes one unhappy. Therefore to be unhappy, one must love, or love to suffer, or suffer from too much happiness."

I could easily quote Woody Allen way back then. Now I think that all my movie quotes are from Pixar. Or "Steel Magnolias."

I had editorials. Far Side cartoons. This is my all time favorite:And other cartoons. That were just as appropriate then as they are now.

And I even wrote down things that my roommate said. Like: "I have to take my own panties off sometimes. Especially after he's tried ten times with his teeth." I have lots of things I wanted to remember. Forevah.

Here are my top five favorite quotes of the moment:

1.“You can lead a horticulture but you can’t make her think.”–Dorothy Parker

2. “Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds.”–Albert Einstein

3. "I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect has intended us to forgo their use." --Galileo Galilei (This one is the signature line of my emails.)

4. "Non scholae, sed vitae discimus" - Seneca (We learn not for school, but for life. I am a Latin teacher. I have to have a Latin quote.)

5. "No one can make you feel inferior without your consent." - Eleanor Roosevelt.

So...what about you? Did you keep a journal? Do you have a favorite quote (s)?

I love quotes.
Especially Woody Allen ones.
My husband has a book of quotes given to him for a birthday. They are so fun!

"80% of success is just showing up."

Sorry - I commented twice by mistake, then decided I had to delete one. I didn't want you to think that I wrote anything inappropriate.

I used to have the Roosevelt one on my fridge for years. :) I taped quotes and poems and the like to my school agendas for years. :) All i can say now is that i was one morbid kid!

I kept a diary but it was filled with teenage nonsense and nothing of any substance.

Unless of course you think that Vanilla Ice was a poet...{ice, ice baby}

"No one can make you feel inferior without your consent." - Eleanor Roosevelt. This quote seems sooo fitting today...gonna have to use it in my post today... sigh...

Oh yes, I kept a journal and in some ways, blogging is my on-line journal. I type a lot faster than I write, so typing online is great for me to keep the memories now.

I participated in the Sunday Cita with Tabitha this past Sunday. Greg read it and sent me a quote by Galileo Galilei that he wants me to use next Sunday.

I enjoyed browsing through your memories and things you enjoyed reading. Had to laugh about the panties!

I'm not a huge quote person, but I do journal. ALways have. Sometimes when I go back and read, my skin crawls at the things I said or thought. Ay-yi-yi! I love the Eleanor Roosevelt quote and actually had that one hanging in my bathroom for about 2 years. (That was when we first moved into this neighborhood. It was a tough transition for me.) LOOOOVED the Garfield cartoon. So funny!

Oh I so miss Far Side. I was never good about keeping a journal -- the blog now is the closest I've come. I do sometimes wish I had, as I know I'd crack myself up if I looked back on it now. Good list of quotes!

My favorite?

"Having children is like being pecked to death by chickens."

I love #5. I have many favorite quotes, mostly from movies. "Have fun storming the castle." - Princess Bride; "Betty Sue, your mama's a dadgum songwriter." - Coal Miner's Daughter; "Zuzu's petals, Zuzu's petals." - It's a Wonderful Life. Seriously, these quotes have nothing to do with anything. And I really like them.

Oh, and I journal just about every single day. Someone I know (you!) convinced me long ago that scrapbook journaling was more important that I wanted to admit. And the rest is history.
