Rather Wordless Wednesday: The aquatic Center

One of the things I love about living here is that the parks and recreation department of the county has some clout. A lot of clout. There is a lot of green space. The parks are beautiful. And the aquatic centers. They are just wow! A while ago, I told you our tale of the outdoor aquatic center - and today, let me show you the same thing - but the inside version.

We decided to meet some friends of ours at the center after school one day. That same day that I found Justin Timberlake with the panties.

And during the week - it looks like this:
There is a small cildren's area.
Bubbles coming up from the floor.
A river. And a whirlpool. That is fun to fill with all the noodles that the aquatic center possesses.
Fountains. And most importantly for my kids...a slide. The kids walk up the stairs. Sit down. Gaze at the other patrons.
And go outside. Before they splash into the water.I wonder if you can feel the temperature difference in the winter.
So, what about you? When did you learn to swim? Do you still like to get in the water? Do your kids enjoy the water? Do the pools look like this where you live?

Ooh, am I first?
My kids learned to swim this year. All of them.
When you have 4 kids in 6 years you just slap them all in life jackets around water.
The big 4 went to swim lessons through the winter. The small one learned how to swim in a foot and a half of water called the kiddie pool at Seaside this summer. On his own. My mom came by and said, "Are you watching him?"
"Uh, kinda. Why?"
"Because he is swimming."

Oh, cool.

We don't have any pools like yours. I'm jealous.

Our last house (in California) had a pool. Hubby and I hated it (pain in the a** to take care of!), but Cody loved it. He actually taught himself how to swim. Since we moved back to Oregon, the only swimming that he's done has been in friends' pools or the river. I know of a few aquatic centers up here, but they're all at least 30 minutes away.

Wow, that is a NICE aquatic center. We have some nice outdoor pools around here, but they closed after Labor Day. Such a shame, as we love to swim and play in the water.

That's an awesome aquatic center. We have some nice ones around here now also.

I love to swim. I can't take my kids to the pool without swimming with them, although I do love to lounge on the side with a book as well.

My parents made me scared of the water when I was real little, because we lived on a ranch with a damned up creek behind out house (very deep). So, it took me a while to get over my fear and to put my head underwater. But, I love the water...and so do my boys.

I forgot to add, great pictures! I love the noodle filled whirlpool. That's so cool. Your girls are so beautiful and such great expressions.

I feel like I've always been swimming. I grew up spending my summers on a lake in Canada, and we just... swam!!! All the time. I adore swimming.

My kids love to swim. Essie has taught herself to swim, and Gert loves it as long as she has her life-vest on. We have a pool here at our apartment complex and we lived down there this summer.

Last fall we went to Wisconsin Dells -the Waterpark Capital of the World... OH my gosh... it was a blast!!!!

wow! what a tremendously wonderful awesome water park ... outdoor AND indoor! Love these fun pics - especially the noodle filled ones :-)

I was a pool rat when I was younger; my kids are following suite. It is easy when you have a pool...I love that about my house!!
So do you have a membership to the aquatic center or do you just pay as you go? That's an incredible place...you're lucky to have that in town.

I learned to swim early in life, as did my kids. Your pool is way better then the ones around us. Love the photos, your girls are mermaidish... like mine, I can't keep them out of the water or me.

Learned to swim at age 5-ish. We have a pool now, so the kids are fish. We also go the local Y for their really cool family pool. But I think I need to visit your pool. The one with that hunky dude.

Awesome pics... looks like a cool place to spend an afternoon. And, OMG, if Hugh Jackman was a regular patron there I swear I would be camped out every. day.

I took swim lessons at the Y when I was in the 3rd grade. And I still like to swim... as long as its in a pool. Ever since I was 11, I've refused to swim in lakes, rivers, streams, oceans, etc.
My girls have taken lessons at the Y the past two summers and have enjoyed them. My mom has a pool, so we spend a lot of time over at her house in the summer... unfortunately her pool does not look like the one you have there at the aquatic center!

Oh, what great pictures!

There is a public pool in our county...it's a big, square pool. No frills. I guess it gets the job done.

We have a pool...and we love it and use it all summer long. It's our season long mini vacation.

I can't remember learning to swim--honestly, I guess I've been doing it my whole life. Libbey mastered it last year (at 5) and is now a fabulous swimmer. Caroline did well this year, too--but she has no fear & that's not always a good thing. I'm thinking next year (when she's 3 1/2) will be a good time to get serious about water skills, and not just "Watch me, Mommy!" and kerplunking into the deep end. With no floaties. While I freak out & destroy her confidence.

Yeah...I can be one of THOSE moms at times.

WHAT a GREAT place! I love all the noodles! Your pictures of the girls are great! Not sure when I learned how to swim...never took swimming lessons...just kinda did it on my own. I really don't LOVE getting in the water...mainly because I don't like to get my hair wet...gosh...I sound JUST like my mom when I said that :( My kids would LIVE in the water! If they only had gills :) We are going to put a pool in at the new house...so next year, bring on the swim parties :) Our public pool is super great...it's just so dang crowded...we don't have an indoor pool QUITE that nice, bummer! I would take my kids there all the time if we did though :) Have a great day Kat!

Great photos. I wanna go there!!!!!!

I learned to swim at 3. I like to swim when I am really hot or in mountain rivers. My kids LOVE swimming...beach, pools, lakes, whatever. Pools are basic here...not like yours

Wow, what a great place. We have a couple of those around here, but rarely frequent them because we have a great pool with a waterslide at our gym!!

I can't remmember learning to swim.....it just seems like something I have always done. We used to float the river near our house on inner tubes every summer and the lake was frequent weekend destination for our family. Then when I started going to summer camp I started water skiing, got pretty good at it one summer with a boyfriend that lived on a lake. We spent everyday out there.

My kids are excellent swimmers, both learned early(around 3-4). My youngest who is almost five kind of taught himself when he was 3 because he wanted to jump off the diving board, I told him he had to be able to swim from the middle of the pool to the side. So he did. Just like that.

Unfortunaely my kids have only experienced lake swimming once or twice..........sad eh?

I was a reservoir bum during my childhood. My parents always owned a boat and every weekend we were on the reservoir. I began water skiing at the age of 3 and lived my first 22 years on the reservoir. Then I moved away and hopped in the occasional pool. Now that my girls are here, I really don't swim. The girls both swim (my 5 yo is still a little unsure of herself so I need to watch her closely) but I spend most of my time watching them. I feel like if they were to need me, I could jump in to them more easily than I could swim to them from the other end of the pool (assuming I could see they needed me as quickly). Which aquatic center is this? And do you need to be a county resident to visit it???

That's a beautiful pool...very kid friendly.

I never learned how to swim. :{

But I float very well.

I am moving in with yall for these pools! How fun.

Thanks for all the comments ya'll! This is a public pool - county run. No membership or county residency or anything. It costs $5 for adults and $3-4 for kids and seniors. We have an annual membership though - cause those $5s can add up!

I learned to swim as an infant. Growing up in Florida will do that for you. I have an anklet for swimming a 1/4 mile at the lake when I was 2. And a bracelet for swimming 1 mile at 4.

Pretty much all the county pools look like this one. The outside ones usually have an indoor pool as well so that they can be open year round. And there are 2 indoor places like this one that are open year round. Also here - that I did not take pictures of - is an instructional pool where they have swimming lessons, water aerobics, that sort of thing.

My kids love the water just as much as I do. And I love that they are old enough - confident enough - skilled enough - that they can do their own thing at the pool and are not hanging onto me the whole time!

I forgot to add, you have some good lookin' patrons at your aquatic center. Hunks. Whew.

Rhea said...

Is your river there called a lazy river? Does it have a currant(current?)? Ours does and it has that whirlpool thingy attached. Very cool.

Keys to the Magic Travel said...

Rhea--If only, if only. I think I'd be there daily. Along with the rest of the female population of Georgia. I kinda prefer it like this. Empty!

Keys to the Magic Travel said...

Rhea--I call it a lazy river. It has a current. And what is fun about this place is that when no one is there, I try to walk it backwards. Very, very difficult. Now the current at the outdoor water place is REALLY strong.

Looks like so much fun.

I learned to swim when I was in elementary school and lived at the pool most of my life during the summer. I was a life guard all through high school as well. I still get in the water with my kids, throw sticks, do hand stands etc. in all my pasty white, mid forty, lovliness...My kids love the pool and we spent alot of time there this summer. Our 3 community pools are beautiful and well kept up. There is a racing pool with a slide...a mid size pool...and a "sprinkler pool" that has a beach entry and goes from 6 inches to 5 feet. We have hung out there alot as my kids have learned how to swim. It has gigantic sprinkler fountains etc...thus it's name. We don'thave the lazy river or those big ginormous slides anywhere...although Lifetime fitness is moving into the area and they do. I love love love how your girls pose for these posts...such willing participants and they are just so fresh faced and precious!

All mine swim and would live in the water if they could. We miss that about GA. WA is just NOT pool friendly. Too darn cold all the darn time! Sorry. I am adjusting (badly)! I much prefer salt water so will only "get in" in the ocean, but on a hot GA day I am soaking away at that pool.

What an awesome aquatic center...NO SUNSCREEN! I am a float on a raft, drink in my hand kind of pool lover.

I have been swimming my whole life. Swam competitively in high school, can't imagine not swimming.

LOVE the pics!!! Especially the black and whites.

If I could I'd spend all day every day at the pool. I'd take my family along too, as long as we had as much fun as you guys have! My little ones are still a tad "hesitant" in the water. Love these pics - you always get such unique, creative shots.

Heather said...

Okay, here's the thing. I live in Colorado and we have almost NO indoor play areas...or pools...or anything!! We have one indoor pool in the area and it's not nearly as cool as yours. And the water is freezing no matter what time of year it is.

Elena said...

We don't have anything near as cool as that. We have two indoor pools, but that's it. And they're only "pools", nothing cool about them. I'm not a swimmer. I took lessons as a kid, but I've NEVER been good at it. I honestly can not tread water. I just don't understand how people do it. My girls have both taught themselves to swim, and I am hoping my other two will as well. I really should get them all lessons to make sure they're doing it right. I am AMAZED at you swimming a mile when you were a baby. NUTS! It's just as crazy to me as it was the first time I heard that story.

hmmmm...where is Kat today? We need a Thursday thirteen or something?! Where's my Sunshine and Lemonade fix?

I'll have to email you off-line, because I think we are in the same general area and I have to find out where this aquatic center is. It looks great!

I love to swim but I'm afraid of water. Figure that out. I could dog paddle as a child. I learned to swim as a teenager, then got better with age.

Hi, I just found your blog and have really enjoyed reading it. Your aquatic center looks like paradise. In England there are very few open air pools as it's too cold most of the time! You are so lucky. When we visited Orlando 2years ago the waterparks were our favorite places. My daughter is also reading Twilight by Stephanie Meyer. She can't put it down.

Hi Kat, In answer to your question about how I found your blog, I think it was through your connection with homeschooling. Some friends who comment on my blog are homeschoolers and I followed links from their blogs. I tried to re-trace my exact steps but couldn't find you again.
Thanks for visiting my blog and for your suggestion for the teapot.
Have a lovely weekend in sunny Georgia.
Lindsay (in rainy England)!!!

Ok, those photos just made me cry. I'm jealous. So very, very jealous.

Must go wallow in my "there's no clean pool near here" misery.

OK your aquatic center rocks! We have a pool where we live and it is where we spent our summer this year....I grew up around water and love water! I am a water worshipper however my husband is not so much a fan of the water. He can take it or leave it but our kiddos are LIKE ME! YAY GREAT POST!

Oh, that looks so neat. I wish we had something like this in my our area.
